SAN Is Carbon Neutral!

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is now a carbon neutral airport! On September 18th SAN became the second airport in North America, and the first airport in California, to receive carbon neutral accreditation from the global agency that establishes carbon standards for airports worldwide.

SAN is certified at “Level 3+”–the highest level through Airports Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. This means that we reduce our carbon emissions under our direct control, engage with airlines and other business partners to reduce their onsite emissions, and offset the remaining carbon emissions under our control.

What does it mean to offset remaining carbon? It means balancing out the environmental impact of our operations by investing in programs and projects that remove or prevent carbon in the atmosphere. Doing so ensures our carbon neutrality status. To accomplish this endeavor we use The Good Traveler—an offset program that actually started at SAN and has since grown nationally.

The Airport Authority was recognized for this accomplishment at a ceremony at the ACI-NA Conference in Tampa.  “This year marks an important milestone in our efforts to promote sustainability and strengthen our commitment to the environment,” said Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) President and CEO Kevin M. Burke. “We congratulate San Diego International Airport on achieving carbon neutral status.  Airports like San Diego International Airport are leading efforts in our industry to lower our carbon footprint through the Airport Carbon Accreditation program.  ACI-NA applauds the airport for their leadership on sustainability and commitment to remaining good environmental partners in their communities.”

At SAN we are committed to sustainability. We will continue to complete 3rd party verified annual carbon emission inventories, to reduce our carbon emissions year over year, to offset residual emissions, and to engage with our airlines, ground transportation operators, and other business partners to help them reduce their onsite carbon emissions.
