2018/19 Sustainability Report Released!
New Sustainability Report reinforces SAN’s commitment to a resilient future.
Each year, San Diego International Airport (SAN) evaluates
its impact on the triple bottom line – people, profit, and the planet – in its Sustainability Report. This critical step defines
future sustainability efforts and reflects our enduring commitment to creating
a strong, resilient, and inclusive airport.
Using the Global Reporting Initiative tool as a guide, this
year’s report highlights key accomplishments in five strategic focus areas:
- Community: Did you know SAN
contributes nearly $12 billion to the regional economy? Or that of the 24
million passengers we served in 2018, more than 1 million were international? Our
consistent growth in international flights is particularly significant because
it points to increased access to global markets.
- Customer: SAN added
services for passengers with disabilities by expanding its courtesy cart
service to pre-security areas and launching an inter-terminal shuttle. The Authority
is striving to ensure it addresses the full spectrum of disabilities regarding
access in order to create a more seamless airport journey.
- Employee: The
Airport Authority was awarded Elite Veterans Honor Roll status by the San Diego
Regional Chamber of Commerce for its ongoing efforts to hire and retain
veterans. We are proud to report that over 10% of our employee population is
comprised of veterans.
- Financial: Two
major capital developments (the Federal Inspection Station and Terminal 2
Parking Plaza) opened that enhance our passengers’ journeys while strengthening
the airport’s financial position. The Federal Inspection Station is five times
larger than our previous facility increasing the number of passengers and
reducing wait times for our international arrivals while the new Parking Plaza
offers much-needed close-in parking and will help offset the multi-year loss of
parking during the replacement of Terminal 1.
- Operational: SAN
officially achieved Carbon Neutrality status under the Airports Council
International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. Last year, SAN realized a
15.2% decrease in Authority-controlled greenhouse gas emissions and is now
balancing the environmental impact of the Authority’s operations by investing
in The Good Traveler carbon offset program.
